PROJECT TITLE: Effects of Forest Management Practices on Flammulated Owls (Otus flammeolus)
KEYWORDS:
AGENCY/UNIT: USFS, Coconino NF, Peaks RD
STATUS: Ongoing
EXPECTED COMPLETION DATE: fall 1996
DESCRIPTION: The first year of survey has been completed. Eight nest sites located. Macro and micro habitat data collected for pre-treatment locations,. 1995 survey will be conducted June-July and additional habitat information will be collected. No data analysis has been completed. The study is being conducted by SWCA Environmental Consultants. The study is contract being conducted under the Kendrick Area Land Management Services Contract (KLSC)
The (KLSC) is a National Pilot Study, where the stumpage value of the timber is used to offset the cost of desired services. Instead of paying a boardfoot cost of the timber harvested the contractor provides desired services in exchange for the value of the timber. One of the services is the flammulated owl study.

PROJECT TITLE: Goshawk nesting habitat on the Prescott National Forest
KEYWORDS: Northern goshawk, Accipiter gentilis, nesting habitat
AGENCY/UNIT: (a Master's thesis at Prescott College)
STATUS: Completed
EXPECTED COMPLETION DATE: 1/20/94
DESCRIPTION: Goshawk nesting habitat was studied during 1993-1994 in three hierarchal levels: nest stand, nest site, and nest/nest tree. Nest sites (0.08 ha. microsites) were analyzed for uniformity among values of habitat variables, as was done for nest statnds. Nest sites were also compared to nest stands, and nest stands were compared to random stands to determine if certain habitat characteristics were being selected by goshawks for nesting. The number of fledglings per occupied nest site for the years 1992 through '94 were compared to other selected western studies. Mean values for habitat variables at nest sites and nest stands were also compared to other studies, and to the Forest Service guidelines for goshawk habitat in the southwest.

PROJECT TITLE: Effects of environmental stress on the density, distribution and foraging ecology of Townsend's Solitaires
KEYWORDS: Environmental stress, foraging ecology,
AGENCY/UNIT: Northern Arizona University
STATUS: Ongoing
EXPECTED COMPLETION DATE: 1996
DESCRIPTION: Study on the effects of environmental stress on the abundance and distribution of juniper and mistletoe fruit (over local elevational and stress gradient and on a regional scale). Studying whether territoriality, territory size, distribution, and density of Townsend's Solitaires is affected directly by resource availability and indirectly by environmental stress factors.

I am not involved in any "partners in flight" projects at this time. However, I am currently studying the ecology of townsend's solitaires in Northern Arizona in relation to local and regional environmental conditions. This is part of a master's thesis at NAU. I have provided info below. call me if you have questions.

P.S. Also doing a study on the effects of timber harvesting on flammulated owls in Northern AZ for the Coconino National Forest. (Research ongoing, completion 1996, Coconino County, Ponderosa pine habitat, same contact person
