PROJECT TITLE: Southwestern Willow Flycatcher Surveys, Cook's Lake
KEYWORDS:
AGENCY/UNIT: US Bureau of Reclamation, Environmental Division, Arizona Projects Office
STATUS: Ongoing
EXPECTED COMPLETION DATE:
DESCRIPTION: Southwestern Willow flycatcher surveys are conducted during late May or early
June to detect willow flycatchers and locate potential nesting sites, near the onset of
egg laying. The second visit (mid-late June or early July) should be timed to re-survey
sites in order to detect late settling or breeding males. Any active nests will be
monitored to determine success of nesting attempts and occurrence of parasitism for
cowbirds. Data collected from these surveys will be integrated into the overall management
plan for Cook's Lake

AGENCY/UNIT: US Bureau of Reclamation, Environmental Division, Arizona Projects Office
STATUS: Ongoing
EXPECTED COMPLETION DATE:
DESCRIPTION: Field work on the Arizona Bird Atlas began in the spring of 1993 and is
expected to continue for 7-9 years. The final product will be publication of the Arizona
Breeding Bird Atlas. Reclamation biologists will be participating in the effort and

PROJECT TITLE: Southwestern Willow Flycatcher Surveys, Roosevelt Lake

EXPECTED COMPLETION DATE: na
DESCRIPTION: Southwestern Willow flycatcher surveys are conducted during late May or early
June to detect willow flycatchers and locate potential nesting site, near the onset of egg
laying. The second visit (mid-late June or early July) should be timed to re-survey sites
in order to detect late settling or breeding males. Significant cottonwood-willow and salt
cedar habitat has developed at the inflows of both the Salt River and Tonto Creek into
Roosevelt Lake. The potential for finding willow flycatchers is considered high. The data
collected on this candidate species will be used in anticipated Section 7 consultations on
dam operations and management of the Tonto Creek Riparian Unit.

PROJECT TITLE: Tonto Creek Riparian Unit
KEYWORDS:
AGENCY/UNIT: US Bureau of Reclamation, Environmental Division, Arizona Projects Office
STATUS: Ongoing
EXPECTED COMPLETION DATE: 2002
DESCRIPTION: The Tonto Creek Riparian Unit was created to mitigate riparian habitat losses
for the new Waddell Dam and modified Roosevelt Dam. The details of the TCRU are detailed
in the Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act amendment to Reclamation (May 1989) and the
Resource Development Plan for the TCRU developed by the Forest Service in cooperation with
the FWS, AGFD, and Reclamation. Year round grazing will be eliminated in favor of a three
pasture system with a maximum of 7 weeks grazing in each pasture prior to the growing
season. The response of the riparian habitat to this grazing regime will be monitored by
Biosystems, Inc. under contract with the Bureau of Reclamation. It is anticipated that the
increase in area and structure of the riparian habitat will be of benefit to many species
of neo-tropical migrants.
