PROJECT TITLE: Habitat use by Elegant Trogons (Trogon elegans) in the mountain range of SE Arizona
KEYWORDS:
AGENCY/UNIT: University of Arizona, Coronado NF
STATUS: Ongoing
EXPECTED COMPLETION DATE: September 1995
DESCRIPTION: 1. Micro-habitat scale: a) to evaluate nest-site use and determine nest productivities of elegant trogons within the Chiricahua, Huachuca, and Santa Rita mountains; and b) to determine territory or home range sizes of trogons, and examine habitat-use within the home ranges. 2. Intermediate-scale: within each mountain range, to determine the overall distribution and population abundance of trogons. 3. Macro-habitat scale: a) to determine if elegant trogons use habitat for their nesting and other home range activities equally among ranges; and b) to compare the abundance of birds among ranges. All of the above objectives characteristics of used and non-used areas of the 3 mountain ranges, to ascertain if criteria for habitat-use differ among the 3 scales. 4. To propose management plans for the ranges within the Coronado NF that contain breeding pairs of elegant trogons.

PROJECT TITLE: Status and trends of birds along the lower Colorado River, Arizona and California
KEYWORDS:
AGENCY/UNIT: University of Arizona, U.S. Fish and Wildl. Service
STATUS: Ongoing
EXPECTED COMPLETION DATE: fall 1995
DESCRIPTION: This study will establish an inventory and monitoring program for the four refuges, concentrating on riparian vegetation. Included will be evalustion of chnges in relative abundances of birds the have occurred since Ohmart and Anderson's early work along the river. The graduate students involved will concentrate on specific aspects of bird-habitat relationships, likely including analysis of activity and reproductive success in patches of riparian vegetation.

PROJECT TITLE: Determining the Status and Trends of Populations of Neotropical Migrant Birds in Riparian Vegetation in Southeastern Arizona.
KEYWORDS:
AGENCY/UNIT: Coronado National Forest, University of Arizona
STATUS:
EXPECTED COMPLETION DATE: ongoing
DESCRIPTION: The objectives of this study are (1) to determine the trends in abundance of Neotropical migrant and resident birds in southeast Arizona, (2) to estabish a program for monitoring changes in the species richness and abundance of birds in southeast Arizona, (3) to determine habitat affinities of birds in riparian vegetation, and (4) to make management recommendations regarding enhancement of bird populations in the study region. Field efforts during 1994 will concentrate on establishing the sampling protocol in the field, and re-evaluating data collected about 10 years ago in riparian vegetation in the Huachuca Mountains. The study will be conducted in cooperation with Dr. William M. Block, Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Experiment Station.

KEYWORDS:
AGENCY/UNIT: University of Arizona and U.S. Air Force
STATUS:
EXPECTED COMPLETION DATE:
DESCRIPTION: This project will establish an inventory-monitoring program for the Range. Sampling will concentrate on desert washes. Although funding will probably not be available for sampling in 1995, USAF intends to seek funding for continuation of the work in 1996.

PROJECT TITLE: Migration of Small Birds
KEYWORDS: Passeriformes, Trochilidae, Weather, Rest/Refuelling, Habitats, Banding
AGENCY/UNIT: University of Arizona
STATUS: Ongoing
EXPECTED COMPLETION DATE: 1999
DESCRIPTION: Banding and observing to determine intensity of flux as a function of time during season, weather patterns (w/ Satellite weather fax), landform and vegetation cover. Banding recaptures (limited data) reveal routing, route fidelity & survival, while body masses correlate with migratory intentions.
