PROJECT TITLE: Bill Williams River Technical Committee
KEYWORDS: Riparian Habitat, Alamo Dam
AGENCY/UNIT: Multi-agency
STATUS: Ongoing
EXPECTED COMPLETION DATE:
DESCRIPTION: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, AZ Game & Fish, State Parks Dept.,
BLM, Bur. of Recl. are all involved in a negotiation process with the Corps of Engineers,
the agency responsible for the operation of Alamo Dam, to develop a plan to change the
flow releases at Alamo Dam to better mimic historical flows. All aspects are being
considered (wildlife, fisheries, recreation, and riparian habitats downstream). At this
point in the planning process, riparian habitats downstream are receiving priority
attention, and things are moving along. The committee's plan has been completed. It is
being reviewed and will be sent to the Corps of Engineers for their approval. No changes
in the operation of Alamo Dam will occur in the immediate future, but hopefully soon. A
better flow regime will benefit the riparian habitat on the Bill Williams River NWR, which
is the reason that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service initiated this committee process.
COUNTIES: La Paz, Mohave
LAND OWNERSHIP: Multi-ownership. This plan will affect not only Alamo Lake, but all land
downstream.
